If you prefer a slower pace of island life, relaxing under palm trees watching glorious sunsets and generally chilling out, then Koh Jum Island is the place for you. All kinds of people, from all corners of the globe have made Koh Jum Island their escape from the rest of the world.
Koh Jum Island or Koh Pu Island is situated in between Krabi town and Koh Lanta Island not far from the famous island of Koh Phi Phi Island in the Andaman Sea of Thailand. The northern part of the Koh Jum Island is mountaineous and called Ban Koh Pu Island with its highest elevation reaching 395 m. The southern part of Koh Jum Island is flat and covered by the natural vegetation of the Andaman Sea Coast, that consists of towering casuarina trees and screw palms. This part is called Ban Koh Jum and is around 30 square kilometers in size.
Koh Jum is inhabited by just over 3000 people, who earn a living from fishing, cloth weaving and rubber plantations. Koh Jum has three primary schools providing education for about 600 children. Naturally the Koh Jum Thailand is blessed with a number of clean sandy beaches with the crystal clear water of the Andaman Sea and areas of coral reefs to explore. With little impact from tourism Koh Pu Island can justify the phrase 'unspoilt and undiscovered' with fresh water from its highest jungle peak serving the local villages of Koh Jum and its rain forest containing an abundance of wildlife and rare plants.
Koh Jum is easiest reached by one of the daily boats from Krabi pier to Koh Lanta , that pass Koh Jum and regularly stop in front of the resorts. The way overland by bus to Laem Kruat Village and by boat from there to Koh Pu Village is not really convenient, but the only way to reach Koh Jum during the monsoon season.
Koh Jum Island accommodation is offered in some basic resorts and some more comfortable Koh Jum bungalow resorts of different styles. All Koh Jum Island resorts offer direct access to the kilometre long white Ting Rai Beach, that stretches along the western coast of Koh Jum and is disrupted only at few places by rocky parts. Swimming is possible without interruption by the tides.
Koh Jum can be best discovered by a motorbike, which can be rented at most resort counters. Streets on Koh Jum are rough and slow driving especially on sandy parts is highly recommended. Please dress properly, when driving or walking through one of local villages on Koh Jum.
